The Story
In Grand Teton National Park, a break in the storm reveals the jagged peaks of the Teton Range beneath a shifting sky. Light moves across the mountains in passing layers, briefly separating ridge, cloud, and shadow before the weather closes in again.
The scene is vast, but quiet. The mountains stand with a stillness that feels almost watchful, unchanged by the movement of weather around them. In black and white, the landscape becomes less about color and more about form, atmosphere, and the weight of the moment.
Silent Vigil reflects the quieter emotional character of the American West — enduring, restrained, and shaped by the slow drama of light moving across land.

What drew me to this scene was the way the mountains seemed to hold their place beneath the storm.
The sky was changing quickly, with light and shadow moving across the range, but the Tetons themselves felt steady and unmoved. I was interested in that contrast — the motion of weather against the permanence of stone.
Black and white felt right for this image because it removed distraction and allowed the structure of the landscape to come forward. The ridgelines, cloud layers, and deep tonal shifts created a quiet sense of scale that color would have softened in a different way.
For me, Silent Vigil is about endurance, atmosphere, and the stillness that can exist even within changing weather.
