<image:title>Wild Horizons - What Makes a Great Wildlife Photo? - Composition: Creating Balance and Flow</image:title>
<image:caption>At its heart, photography is storytelling through design. Strong composition guides the viewer’s eye, creating a sense of balance and harmony in the frame. Techniques like the rule of thirds, leading lines, or using natural frames (like branches or tall grasses) can help highlight the subject without overwhelming the scene. Good composition doesn’t just organize the photograph—it directs emotion, drawing the viewer into the animal’s world. *Note this image is illustrating rule of thirds and rule of space.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wild Horizons - What Makes a Great Wildlife Photo? - Environment & Background: Setting the Stage</image:title>
<image:caption>A great wildlife photo isn’t just about the animal—it’s about where that animal lives. The environment tells half the story. A snow-covered ridgeline behind a bighorn sheep, the golden grasses surrounding a black bear, or the vast ocean backdrop of a puffin adds context and depth. Just as important is minimizing distractions: clean backgrounds or softly blurred surroundings help the subject stand out while still showing the wild world they inhabit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wild Horizons - What Makes a Great Wildlife Photo? - Subject: Character and Presence</image:title>
<image:caption>Every species has a unique character, and great wildlife photography captures that essence. Whether it’s the piercing eyes of an owl, the graceful stride of a moose, or the alert curiosity of a fox, the subject should convey a sense of presence. Patience is essential here—waiting for the right posture, expression, or interaction often makes the difference between a forgettable image and one that captivates. Each image should have a clear subject that draws the viewers eye.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wild Horizons - What Makes a Great Wildlife Photo? - Behavior: The Moment of Truth</image:title>
<image:caption>What truly brings a wildlife image to life is behavior. A photo of a wolf simply standing is interesting, but a wolf howling into the morning mist tells a story. Capturing action—whether it’s hunting, feeding, playing, or interacting with others—reveals the animal’s natural rhythms and connects us to its wildness. Behavior shows us not just what an animal looks like, but who it is.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Burrowing owls are small, roughly the height of an American Robin, but slightly bulkier (~8-10 inches in height) Habitat Burrowing Owls live in open, treeless areas with little vegetation, like grasslands and deserts. They are very adaptable and it’s common to see them in vacant lots, golf courses, and agricultural fields.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wild Horizons - California Burrowing Owls - General Photography Tips</image:title>
<image:caption>These are tiny birds on the ground, but try to photograph them at eye level for more impact and cleaner backgrounds on your images. Borrowing Owls are fairly tolerant of people and will allow you to get reasonably close to help fill a frame. I wasn’t able to do this, but if possible early morning and late evening light is best to avoid some of the harsh shadows you see in my photos.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wild Horizons - Grand Teton Grizzly Bears - Tips for photographing bears</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’re planning a trip to photograph bears/wildlife, I’d suggest practicing before going. Birds are one of the more challenging things to photograph and i often recommend learning with them. They help you learn shutter speeds, panning and acquiring the subject through the view finder. You’ll want to make sure you have a decent long lens in order to help keep a safe distance. A 400mm or greater focal length is recommended. There are companies which rent lenses on a weekly basis and it can be a great option if you don’t own one. Shoot wide open or just slightly stopped down. If you have an F/6.3 lens, shoot at F/6.3 or F/7.1. Set your camera for continuous auto focus If you have a newer camera, use eye auto focus if possible Learn about and use exposure compensation. If you have tripod or monopod, use it. Turn on continuous shooting and shoot bursts rather than single photos. Use Fast shutter speeds and learn your shutter speeds. Slow moving bears I will generally shoot between 1/500 - 1/800 sec. Moving bears 1/1000- 1/2000+ These are general rules, and it’s important to experiment.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wild Horizons - Maine Puffins - Robertson Sea Tours</image:title>
<image:caption>We spent two mornings with Captain Jamie Robertson of Robertson Sea Tours aboard the Kandi Leigh. We booked a private charter so I could lug multiple camera bodies, lenses and tripod/monopods aboard without worrying about disturbing other passengers on board. This proved to be a really great option and I was able to get some fantastic photos and great access. On top of that we had the island pretty much to ourselves each morning. I’ve added a link below because I think this is a really great option for photographers. You can also book a seat on a normally scheduled tour. Captain Jamie limits the number to six passengers on the boat, so it’s never crowded. *Note: I’ve not been compensated in any way for this endorsement and paid full price for the charter. I had a great experience and feel like this is a great option and value for photographers and is why i’m sharing this.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wild Horizons - Black Bear Photography in Great Smoky Mountain National Park</image:title>
<image:caption>History of Cades Cove Cades Cove is basically a valley within the borders of the national park. It was first inhabited by European Settlers around 1820, who found the area contain very productive farm land and quickly built homes, barns and cleared the land for farming. By the mid 1800’s there were over 600 people living in the valley and they’d built a thriving community including churches, schools and a post office. In the 1920’s, North Carolina and Tennessee began buying land around the valley for the creation of a park. Many of the settlers were eventually bought out with a few hold-outs being allowed to sign lifetime leases before the land was given over the park. By the late 1940’s most of the residents had gone with the last school and post office closing up. Today, there are many historic cabins and churches scattered through the valley which are maintained by the park service. The valley itself has become one of the attractions within Great Smoky Mountain National Park.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wild Horizons - Nikon Z 400mm F/4.5 review</image:title>
<image:caption>Introduction I’ve spent the past week testing out the Nikon Z 400mm F/4.5 as a potential replacement for my beloved 500pf. For folks out there having similar debates, I thought i’d share my thought process behind why I would even consider this as well as some results of my tests. Keep in mind, I’m not an optics engineer, so this review will be mostly based on my experiences shooting with the two lenses and photographs I’ve captured. If you’re looking for a deep technical discussion, i’ve included some links in the bottom of the article to help with those sorts of questions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wild Horizons - Black Bears of Alligator River - A large boar black bear.</image:title>
<image:caption>This was easily the largest bear we saw and he was clearly the alpha of the area we were in. Black bears do a funny “cowboy walk” to assert their dominance and we saw him do that several times. We named him “Lord Chunkington” and I would guess he was 600-700lbs or more! Don’t worry, this photo was taken with a 500mm lens and is still cropped. We were safely more than 250 feet away with water in between us and the boar.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wild Horizons - Black Bears of Alligator River - How to stay safe around Black Bears</image:title>
<image:caption>It would be a bit irresponsible not to mention something about bears and safety. I live in the Georgia mountains and we see bears with some frequency around our house. I’m fairly comfortable around them, but they are wild animals and can be dangerous if they become used to humans and learn to associate us with food sources. In the resources below i’ve included a link to Bearwise.org. It’s a great resource for learning about black bears and safety and I often point friends and family who are fearful of bears to the site. In general I try to do the following when photographing them: Keep a safe distance. 150 feet is the minimum to ensure they don’t feel crowded. I shoot with a 500mm lens and often crop photos. Never block a bears path when it’s walking and don’t approach them ever. Seems obvious, but don’t taunt or try to distract them. I can’t tell you the number of photographers I see trying to get their attention by stomping on the ground or making noises. Be ethical, and just let them go about doing bear things. Don’t feed or even keep food on you while observing. Dogs and bears don’t mix…leave the dogs at home.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wild Horizons - Black Bears of Alligator River - Red Wolves Hard Return</image:title>
<image:caption>Today there are wild Red Wolves roaming in Eastern North Carolina, the first successful program to reintroduce an extinct species back in the wild. While there’s reason to be excited by that, the reality is that these animals are barely clinging to life. I recently read there are less than 30 in the wild after numbering over 100 at one point in the early 2000’s. Wolves have been killed by hunters and farmers mistaking them for coyotes. Vehicle strikes on the nearby highway also account for losses as well. Lastly, there has also been some evidence of malicious attacks outside of hunting season with dead wolves being found with tampered tracking collars. It’s important to raise awareness of these issues and organizations like the Red Wolf Coalition (link below) are working hard to connect people with the plight of these amazing animals. On a personal note, I hoped to be able to see one, but did not expect to given their diminished numbers. On our second to last day on the refuge, as we were preparing to leave and head to our rental around 9am, we happened to see a bear in a nearby field running. When we looked closer we saw, several hundred yards away from the bear, a young red wolf (we believe it was one of the pups born this year) closely watching the bear and eventually running away. The wolf stopped and looked back at us and I was able to capture this shot. It’s heavily cropped as the wolf was several hundred feet away; but this was a highlight of the trip for me and a blessing to be able witness this animal with my own eyes.</image:caption>
