The Story

In the fading light of a spring evening, a young black bear pauses at the edge of a meadow, half-hidden in the tall grasses of the Smokies. For only a moment, the cub stood still—curious, cautious, and quietly aware of the world unfolding around it.

Photographed during five days spent following bears through the valleys and forests of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Emerging reflects the kind of fleeting encounter that often defines wildlife photography at its most meaningful.

There is no drama here, only presence: a quiet meeting between wildness and stillness.

Why I Made This Photograph

The subdued tones, soft greens, and intimate perspective drew me to this scene.

Rather than portraying the bear as powerful or imposing, I was interested in something more vulnerable—a moment of curiosity, growth, and awareness. These quieter encounters often reveal more about an animal than moments of action ever could.

Wildlife photography is frequently associated with drama and spectacle. What I remember most from this evening, however, was the stillness. The bear emerged briefly from the meadow grasses, paused, and then disappeared back into the landscape.

For me, that fleeting moment is what this photograph is really about.
