The Story
In the fading color of autumn, a bull moose moves quietly through a mist-filled meadow beneath the cottonwoods of Grand Teton National Park. The valley feels suspended between seasons — the warmth of fall still present in the trees, while the cool blue haze of approaching winter settles low across the landscape.
For a moment, the moose appears almost absorbed into the meadow itself. Its dark form moves through layers of fog, muted gold, and soft distance, becoming part of the atmosphere rather than separate from it.
Timberline Crossing reflects the kind of encounter that defines the quieter side of the American West: solitary, restrained, and deeply connected to place.

What drew me to this scene was the atmosphere.
The moose was not isolated against a clean background or presented as a dramatic subject. Instead, it moved through the landscape as it naturally existed — partially softened by fog, framed by autumn cottonwoods, and surrounded by the cool stillness of the valley.
I was interested in the balance between presence and place. The animal is clearly there, but the meadow, the mist, and the season all carry equal weight. That relationship is what gives the image its emotional quiet.
For me, Timberline Crossing is about solitude, transition, and the brief moments when wildlife seems to belong so completely to the landscape that the two become inseparable.
