The Story
Partially hidden within the forest of Yellowstone, a great gray owl emerges through layers of pine and shadow. Its bright eyes hold complete attention, while the surrounding branches soften the scene and create a sense of distance, mystery, and quiet enclosure.
The owl feels both present and almost hidden — visible for a moment, yet still belonging fully to the forest around it. Nothing in the scene announces itself loudly. The image depends on patience, subtlety, and the slow recognition of a wild presence within the trees.
Through the Pines reflects the elusive character of great gray owls in winter: silent, watchful, and almost ghost-like within the landscape they inhabit.

What drew me to this image was the way the owl seemed to appear from within the forest rather than in front of it.
The layers of pine, shadow, and soft winter texture created a natural frame around the bird, allowing the image to feel intimate without removing the owl from its habitat. I was interested in that balance — the direct connection of the owl’s gaze, and the mystery created by everything still partially hidden.
Great gray owls have a quiet intensity that feels different from many other birds of prey. They can seem almost still even when fully alert, blending into the forest until a small shift in posture or light reveals them.
For me, Through the Pines is about patience, attention, and the brief moment when the hidden life of the forest becomes visible.
