The Story

High in the forest canopy of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a black bear rested quietly among moss-covered limbs as soft spring leaves blurred around the scene. The forest felt still and enclosed, as if the moment had been hidden above the trail and briefly revealed through the trees.

There was no dramatic movement or obvious tension. The bear was simply at rest, tucked into the structure of the forest and surrounded by the soft green atmosphere of spring. That quietness is what gave the scene its emotional weight.

Resting Above the Forest reflects the kind of intimate wildlife moment that defines the Small Works collection: calm, understated, and deeply connected to the natural rhythm of the Smoky Mountain woods.

Why I Made This Photograph

This image was selected for the Small Works collection because of its quiet atmosphere, soft palette, and intimate sense of calm.

The bear was resting high above the forest floor, surrounded by moss, branches, and new spring leaves. I was drawn to the privacy of the moment — the feeling that the forest had briefly opened just enough to reveal something usually hidden.

Rather than emphasizing power or behavior, this photograph holds onto stillness. The soft greens and layered canopy create a gentle frame around the bear, allowing the image to feel calm, personal, and quietly connected to place.

For me, Resting Above the Forest is a reminder that some of the wildest moments in nature are also the quietest.
