The Story

At Great Sand Dunes National Park, storm clouds gathered above the desert as wind and rain moved across the open landscape. Light shifted quickly over the sand, creating layers of shadow, texture, and tone that softened the horizon and changed the dunes into something almost otherworldly.

Without color, the scene becomes a study of form. The curves of the dunes, the movement of weather, and the tonal transitions across the sand become the subject themselves — quiet, sculptural, and briefly held in place.

Shifting Silence reflects the more abstract side of the Quiet Earth collection: a landscape shaped by movement, yet rendered as stillness.

Why I Made This Photograph

What drew me to this scene was the way the weather transformed the dunes.

The storm moved across the landscape in layers, softening the distance and allowing the shapes of the sand to become almost abstract. I was interested in the quiet tension between movement and stillness — wind and rain passing through a place that, in the photograph, feels calm and suspended.

Black and white allowed the image to become less about the desert as a location and more about form, tone, and atmosphere. The absence of color helped bring forward the curves, textures, and subtle transitions that might otherwise be overlooked.

For me, Shifting Silence is about the way weather can briefly change how we see a familiar landscape, turning sand, shadow, and sky into something quieter and more mysterious.
