The Story
Along the rugged coast of Maine near Petit Manan, a harbor seal rests against weathered stone while Atlantic waves break behind it. The scene holds two opposing forces at once: the quiet stillness of the animal and the constant motion of the sea.
For a moment, the seal seems suspended between those rhythms. The surf rises with force in the background, while the animal remains calm and grounded within the shoreline, shaped by the same tide, rock, and weather that define the coast.

What drew me to this scene was the contrast between stillness and motion.
The harbor seal was resting quietly among the rocks while the Atlantic moved with force behind it. I was interested in the way the animal seemed both isolated from the energy of the surf and completely connected to it. Nothing about the moment felt staged or dramatic; it felt like a natural pause within the rhythm of the coastline.
The soft neutral palette, weathered stone, and breaking water gave the image a restrained, atmospheric quality. Rather than focusing only on the seal, I wanted the photograph to hold the feeling of place — the cold air, the rough coast, and the quiet life that exists between waves.
For me, Resting Between Waves is about solitude, endurance, and the brief moments of calm found within a restless landscape.
