The Story
On the prairie at Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, two young prairie dogs turned an ordinary moment into something full of personality. One stood tall and animated, while the other paused mid-meal, creating a scene that felt both playful and strangely familiar.
The open grassland setting keeps the composition simple, allowing the interaction between the two animals to carry the image. Their gestures, posture, and timing give the moment a lighthearted quality without needing anything more than the quiet space around them.
Tiny Arguments reflects the more humorous side of the Small Works collection: a simple wildlife moment with warmth, character, and a small spark of recognition.

Why I Made This Photograph
This image was selected for the Small Works collection because of its humor, simplicity, and immediate emotional connection.
The prairie dogs seemed to bring a familiar kind of personality to the frame — one animated and expressive, the other paused in the middle of eating as if caught in the middle of a tiny disagreement. It was a small moment, but one that felt instantly understandable.
I was drawn to the clean prairie setting because it allowed the behavior to remain the focus. There is no visual clutter, only the soft tones of the grassland and the quiet comedy of the interaction.
For me, Tiny Arguments is a reminder that some of the most memorable wildlife moments are not dramatic or rare, but simple, expressive, and unexpectedly familiar.
