The Story
Each winter, pine siskins drift down from the northern forests into the mountains of North Georgia, moving quietly through feeders, woodlands, and open clearings before disappearing again with the changing season.
In this brief moment, one crossed through soft winter light with its wings open, revealing the subtle yellow markings often hidden within its movement. The scene was simple and fleeting — a small bird suspended for only an instant against a clean, quiet background.
Winter Crossing reflects the delicate rhythm of seasonal wildlife: brief arrivals, quiet movement, and the small moments that mark the changing year.

Why I Made This Photograph
This image was selected for the Small Works collection because of its lightness, simplicity, and sense of motion.
Pine siskins are small, restless birds, often noticed in winter only when they arrive in groups and move quickly through the trees. I was drawn to the brief moment when this one crossed the frame in flight, revealing the subtle yellow in its wings against the soft background.
The photograph feels delicate rather than dramatic. The open space, muted tones, and suspended movement give the image a quiet, almost weightless quality.
For me, Winter Crossing is about seasonal passage — the brief presence of a winter visitor moving through the southern mountains before disappearing again with the changing light.
