Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge, California — February 2025
Half-hidden among the earth and stone of the desert floor, this burrowing owl held an unwavering stare as evening light settled across the refuge. Unlike most owls, burrowing owls spend much of their lives on the ground, often standing just outside their underground homes with an alert, almost curious expression.
