The Story
At Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge, a burrowing owl stood low among the desert earth and scattered stone as evening light settled across the landscape. Half-hidden by its surroundings, the owl held an unwavering stare — alert, still, and quietly expressive.
Unlike many owls, burrowing owls live much of their lives close to the ground, often appearing just outside their underground homes with a posture that feels both cautious and curious. The low perspective in this image brings the viewer into that world, reducing the scene to soft desert tones, direct eye contact, and the quiet presence of a small predator at rest.
Low Horizon reflects the simplicity that often defines the Small Works collection: a close, contemplative wildlife moment shaped by patience, low light, and a strong connection with the subject.

Why I Made This Photograph
This image was selected for the Small Works collection because of its direct connection, low perspective, and quiet desert atmosphere.
The burrowing owl’s expression immediately holds attention, but the surrounding earth tones keep the photograph calm and restrained. I was drawn to the way the bird seemed almost level with the land itself — not perched above the scene, but part of the desert floor.
The simplicity of the composition allows the owl’s posture and gaze to carry the image. There is very little distraction, only the subtle texture of the habitat and the watchful presence of the bird.
For me, Low Horizon is about quiet attention, small-scale wildness, and the understated character of one of the desert’s most charismatic birds.
