The Story
In the quiet haze of an autumn morning, Grizzly Bear 610 leads her three cubs across still water beneath rising steam in Grand Teton National Park. The bears appear only briefly, reduced to shape, movement, and atmosphere as they pass through the soft layers of fog.
The scene feels almost dreamlike. Detail gives way to mood, and the moment becomes less about seeing everything clearly than sensing the bond, instinct, and quiet direction within the family group.
Through the Mist reflects the mystery often present in the wild — a fleeting glimpse of grizzlies moving together through a landscape that seems to reveal them for only a moment before taking them back.

What drew me to this scene was the atmosphere and the sense of quiet movement within it.
Grizzly Bear 610 and her cubs were not presented in sharp detail or dramatic light. Instead, they moved through mist, steam, and still water, appearing almost as silhouettes within the landscape. I was interested in how little detail was needed for the moment to feel complete.
The image held something more mysterious than a traditional wildlife portrait. It was about shape, instinct, family, and the brief passage of animals through a place that felt larger than they were.
For me, Through the Mist is about the quiet bond between a mother bear and her cubs, and the way the wild sometimes reveals itself only partially, through atmosphere, distance, and stillness.
