The Story
In the spring forests of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, an eastern bluebird paused quietly atop a weathered branch, surrounded by soft green tones and open space. The scene was simple by nature — a single bird, a delicate perch, and the calm color of the season.
For a brief moment, the bluebird seemed suspended between movements. Its posture was light and balanced, while the clean background allowed the color and shape of the bird to stand on their own without distraction.
Still Perch reflects the quiet simplicity of the Small Works collection: familiar wildlife, gently seen, and held in a moment of calm.

Why I Made This Photograph
This image was selected for the Small Works collection because of its clean composition, soft palette, and peaceful presence.
The eastern bluebird is a familiar species, but in this moment the simplicity of the scene gave it a quiet elegance. I was drawn to the way the bird’s color stood gently against the soft spring greens, without the image needing additional complexity or drama.
The open space around the subject creates a sense of lightness and calm. It gives the photograph room to breathe, making it especially suited for smaller spaces, reading corners, shelves, or quiet interiors.
For me, Still Perch is about the beauty of a familiar bird made still for a moment — simple, delicate, and quietly alive.
