The Story
In the sage flats of Grand Teton National Park, a bull moose stood alone beneath the surrounding mountains as autumn edged toward winter. His heavy build, scarred antlers, and steady posture carried the presence of an animal shaped by the season behind him.
The landscape around him was muted and open, allowing the portrait to feel calm rather than dramatic. There was strength in the scene, but it was held quietly — in the earth tones, the stillness, and the direct presence of the moose within the valley.
Valley King reflects the grounded character of the Small Works collection: a simple western wildlife portrait with quiet strength, natural detail, and a strong sense of place.

Why I Made This Photograph
This image was selected for the Small Works collection because of its simplicity, quiet strength, and classic western character.
The bull moose had a rugged presence, but the photograph does not rely on drama. I was drawn to the way he stood naturally within the muted sage flats, surrounded by the tones and openness of the Teton valley.
His posture, antlers, and heavy frame give the image weight, while the soft earth-colored landscape keeps the overall feeling calm and approachable. It is a portrait of strength, but also of stillness.
For me, Valley King is about the enduring presence of one of North America’s most iconic animals within the quiet spaces of the American West.
