The Story

Outside Grand Teton National Park, a spring storm sweeps across the open plains, sending rain curtains down from the clouds in towering sheets. The sky darkens heavily overhead, while a thin band of distant light remains along the horizon.

The landscape itself becomes quiet beneath the movement of weather. There is no single animal or tree to hold the scene; instead, the storm becomes the presence — immense, shifting, and almost overwhelming against the openness of the West.

Breaking Storm reflects the atmosphere and scale that define the Quiet Earth collection: weather, distance, and land held together in a moment of natural tension.

Why I Made This Photograph

What drew me to this scene was the scale of the storm.

The sky felt enormous, with dark clouds pressing down over the plains while rain moved across the horizon in visible layers. I was interested in the contrast between the violence of the weather and the stillness of the land beneath it.

There was a quiet power in the moment. Nothing needed to be added to the frame — the storm itself carried the emotion, shaping the landscape through light, shadow, and movement.

For me, Breaking Storm is about atmosphere, scale, and the way weather can become the central presence in a western landscape.
