The Story
In the coastal fields of eastern North Carolina, a black bear moved slowly through a sea of blooming goldenrod as the season began shifting toward cooler days. The field was dense with color and texture, softening the bear’s form as it passed quietly through the landscape.
For only a brief moment, the bear lifted its head above the flowers — watchful, still, and partially hidden — before disappearing again into the golden cover around it.
Among the Gold reflects the kind of wildlife encounter that often rewards patience: not dramatic or immediate, but layered, atmospheric, and quietly alive within the landscape.

Why I Made This Photograph
This image was selected for the Small Works collection because of its rich natural palette and quiet environmental storytelling.
The bear is not isolated from the landscape, but held within it — surrounded by native coastal wildflowers, soft greens, and late-season goldenrod. That balance between subject and setting gives the photograph a slower, more immersive quality.
Rather than presenting the black bear as bold or imposing, Among the Gold captures the feeling of discovering something wild just beyond the edge of the trail: present for only a moment, then hidden again by the landscape itself.
