The Story
After a summer rain in Rocky Mountain National Park, a young moose paused within a dense stand of willows, partially hidden by the soft green growth surrounding it. Water still clung to its fur, and the forest felt close, quiet, and newly washed.
For a brief moment, the animal looked directly through the thicket, creating a sense of connection shaped by proximity rather than drama. The scene was intimate and restrained — less about the scale of the animal and more about its quiet awareness within the landscape.
Between the Willows reflects the gentler side of a species often associated with size and strength: calm, observant, and deeply at home in the wet summer habitat of the mountains.

What drew me to this image was the closeness of the encounter.
The young moose was tucked into the willows after the rain, surrounded by soft greens, wet fur, and the quiet texture of its natural habitat. I was interested in the way the scene felt both hidden and immediate — as though the animal had allowed only a brief glimpse into its world.
Rather than presenting the moose as imposing, I wanted the photograph to hold onto something gentler: curiosity, stillness, and the quiet vulnerability that can be present in younger wildlife.
For me, Between the Willows is about that small moment of recognition — when an animal pauses, meets your gaze, and the landscape seems to fall silent around it.
