The Story
Before sunrise in Glacier National Park, Lake McDonald rested in near perfect stillness beneath the dark silhouettes of the surrounding peaks. The first traces of morning light had not yet fully arrived, but soft layers of blue and lavender were beginning to move across the sky and water.
A single stone beneath the surface anchors the foreground, giving the quiet expanse a subtle point of connection. Around it, the long exposure softens the lake into reflection and atmosphere, creating a scene that feels suspended between night and day.
Before First Light reflects the silence found just before a landscape awakens — calm, simple, and held in the brief stillness before morning begins.

What drew me to this scene was the stillness before sunrise.
Lake McDonald was almost completely calm, and the mountains held their shape in the dark while the first color of morning began to appear. I was interested in the quiet transition of the moment — not full daylight, not night, but something softer in between.
The single stone beneath the water gave the image a small, grounding presence within the larger silence of the lake and mountains. It kept the scene from becoming purely distant, offering a quiet place for the eye to rest.
For me, Before First Light is about patience, simplicity, and the calm that exists just before the world begins to wake.
