The Story
In the muted light of an autumn morning, a mature bull elk stands motionless within the sage-covered landscape of Yellowstone. The season is beginning to fade, the grasses have softened in color, and the animal seems completely at home within the restraint of the scene.
Rather than photographing the intensity of the rut, Autumn Monarch reflects a quieter kind of presence. The bull’s gaze, symmetrical antlers, and calm posture create a portrait defined less by motion than by awareness.
There is strength here, but it is held quietly — a moment of stillness from one of the West’s most iconic animals.

What drew me to this scene was not the drama often associated with bull elk, but the stillness.
The subdued autumn tones, soft atmosphere, and balanced posture of the elk created a portrait that felt calm, powerful, and deeply connected to place. I was interested in the quiet authority of the animal — the way it seemed to belong completely to the sage, the morning light, and the fading season around it.
In wildlife photography, it is easy to be drawn toward action. But sometimes the more enduring image comes from restraint: a brief moment when an animal simply pauses, watches, and allows its presence to speak for itself.
For me, that is what Autumn Monarch is about.
