The Story
Off Petit Manan Island, an Atlantic Puffin races across the surface of the North Atlantic, its feet striking the water in quick succession before lifting fully into flight. Behind it, a trail of splashes marks the final seconds of contact with the sea.
The scene is built on transition. The gray ocean remains quiet and restrained, while the puffin’s color and movement bring a brief burst of life across the surface. For only a moment, the bird is held between two worlds — still tied to the water, but already committed to the air.
Breaking Free reflects the determination and energy of a seabird shaped by distance, weather, and the constant demands of life along the Atlantic coast.

What drew me to this image was the sense of effort inside such a small moment.
The puffin was not simply flying; it was breaking contact with the sea, pushing forward across the surface until lift finally took over. The trail of splashes behind it gave the scene rhythm and movement, while the quiet gray tones of the water allowed the bird’s color and determination to stand apart.
I was interested in that brief transition between struggle and flight. It felt energetic, but not chaotic — a clean, decisive moment where motion, instinct, and resilience all came together.
For me, Breaking Free is about persistence, momentum, and the fleeting instant when a wild bird leaves one element behind and enters another.
