The Story

On the remote cliffs of Petit Manan Island, an Atlantic Puffin pauses among dark volcanic rock between trips from the sea. The rugged coastline surrounds the bird in shadow and texture, while the small flashes of color in its bill and feet become quiet points of life within the darker landscape.

The scene is restrained and still, shaped less by the puffin’s familiar brightness than by the harsh environment it inhabits. Stone, wind, ocean, and isolation all become part of the portrait.

Keeper of the Cliffs reflects the quieter strength of a seabird often seen as playful or colorful, but here revealed as resilient, watchful, and deeply connected to the North Atlantic coast.

Why I Made This Photograph

What drew me to this scene was the contrast between the puffin’s small presence and the weight of the surrounding rock.

Atlantic Puffins are often photographed for their color and charm, but I was interested in something quieter. In this moment, the bird felt less like a bright subject placed against a backdrop and more like part of the island itself — shaped by stone, weather, and the rough edge of the sea.

The dark volcanic rock gave the image a sense of depth and isolation, while the subtle color of the puffin kept the scene from becoming heavy. I wanted the photograph to hold both qualities: the delicacy of the bird and the endurance of the place it calls home.

For me, Keeper of the Cliffs is about resilience, contrast, and the quiet life that persists along the remote edges of the North Atlantic.
