The Story
On the rugged cliffs of Petit Manan Island, an Atlantic puffin paused high above the Atlantic swells before returning to the open water. The surrounding granite, muted sky, and wide coastal space gave the moment a feeling of quiet isolation.
The puffin’s small form stood against the scale of the North Atlantic — colorful, resilient, and briefly still within a place shaped by wind, weather, and sea. Rather than emphasizing action or close detail, the image leans into space and restraint.
Sentinel of the Sea reflects the quieter side of coastal wildlife: a small seabird holding its place for a moment along the wild edge of the Maine coast.

Why I Made This Photograph
This image was selected for the Small Works collection because of its simplicity, open space, and quiet coastal atmosphere.
Atlantic puffins are often photographed for their color and character, but I was drawn to the restraint of this moment. The bird was small within the frame, perched against the cliffs and open sky, with the surrounding space doing as much work as the subject itself.
The negative space gives the photograph a sense of air, distance, and calm. It feels less like a traditional wildlife portrait and more like a small glimpse of life along the edge of the sea.
For me, Sentinel of the Sea is about resilience, solitude, and the quiet presence of a seabird shaped by the North Atlantic coast.
