Ever since reading about the Audubon Society’s Project Puffin i’ve always wanted to see and photograph them. There are several different options for doing so, but the best requires entering into a lottery for one of very few spaces onto a small island off the coast of Maine. After several years of being unsuccessful with this lottery, i decided to explore alternatives. I found a small company that would do a private charter to Petit Manan Island off the coast near Milbridge, Maine. The only catch, is that you are not allowed on the island and must photograph from on board a small rolling boat.
I spent two days photographing from this boat and captured thousands of frames of puffins. One of my favorite behaviors was watching them run on water as they took flight. They’re incredibly awkward when they land and walk on land, but in takeoff and in flight are amazingly graceful. I call this image the divine clown because Puffins are sometimes referred to as the clowns of the bird world yet they walk on water!
