Sometimes the best moments in nature photography come when you least expect them. While scouting sunset locations around Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, I kept encountering a group of three male Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep throughout the day. They always seemed to be just ahead of us, moving gracefully along the rugged terrain.
As the sun began to sink, casting warm light across the cliffs, we made our way toward the overlook I had planned to shoot. That’s when I spotted them again—this time resting on the sheer walls of the canyon. I was prepared with my landscape setup, but suddenly, the opportunity shifted. With only seconds to spare, I switched over to my wildlife gear, adjusted my settings, and captured this image just before the three friends rose and disappeared into the canyon shadows. That moment became The Three Amigos—a blend of timing, instinct, and a little bit of luck.
